What Is Music?

As we are going to talk about music here every now and then, it is good to clear up what to understand under the term "music".

I wrote in my previous post that I had been in the music school for 3 years but there was no mentioning about WHAT music really was. Yeah right, music is the stuff that comes out of instruments...

How is one supposed to do something well, if he doesn't understand what is it about???

So what do you think about the following:

This is probably the nicest definition for music I found, from Emmy Award winner composer, concert pianist and recording artist Jace Vek.

"There must be some divine intervention, some ethereal inspiration that opens the doorway to a special universe. A place where what we see and feel cannot be described in words as we know them but in a special language.

And for a brief moment, the listener is catapulted into this special universe. A place where sound transcends the boundaries of age and culture.

This is our language. The language of music."

It's not strictly technical (music is not all about technique anyway, is it?) but gives us the essence: it is a language. And I just find it beautiful how this quote describes what kind of language it is.

Check out Jace's website at www.jacevek.com for more of his music and concert dates as well, and tune in to the weekly radio show on BlogTalkRadio, each Wednesday at 3pm (Eastern Standard Time) Jace Vek Live

UPDATE:

After the latest episode, I highly recommend you listening to what else Jace and his producer has to say about this subject here. How they describe what music really is, I would even say should be taught in schools as a basic.

And of course, you are in for a treat of an extremely powerful, uplifting music experience as well:
